My Top 3 Killer Tips for Conquering Food Cravings
Let’s face it, being on a diet sucks until you really get into the swing of things. When it becomes a life change, that’s when it stops sucking (almost), that’s because your getting used to it, your body’s adjusted and your more experienced; you know what foods to eat and how to cook them.
BUT! It’s a big but, there’s always something that’s consistently screaming at me, screaming “Eat me! I’m so god dam tasty, just eat me!”. It’s my weight loss nemesis that’s making all the noise; everyone’s got a food nemesis, regardless of being on a diet or not.
The big bad wolf
My (super, supper, supper) nemesis is sauces; I just love eating sauces with everything, almost to the point it’s a cardinal sin to have a meal without any. When I say sauce, I don’t just mean mayonnaise or ketchup, I quite literally mean every sauce out there, they’ve all got the own rightful place as such, but I love them all.
Sauces have, and still are the toughest thing I’ve had to cut down and stop eating. Things like chocolate, sweets, pastries, takeaways etc etc were had to give up, but they don’t come anywhere near my love for sauces. I’d swap chocolate for sauces in a heartbeat, given the choice!
Although I said I like all sauces, there are a few that I’m particularly partial to, so here are my favourite sauces.
- Mayonnaise – I have this with everything, in sandwiches (without butter), in homemade dished such as potato salad & coleslaw and especially on the side of the plate (with most meals!). One good thing with mayonnaise is there’s loads of low fat versions out there, making it easy to switch over. They take a little getting used to but once you are, there fine. I personally use Tesco low fat mayo.
- Garlic Sauce – A form of twist on regular mayonnaise, but I think it deserves it’s own place on the list, just for being so yummy!
- Burger Sauce – I think this is my favourite. I love this sauce; I’d eat it all day long if I was given half a chance. Unfortunately, it’s almost 90% fat, whatever way I try and look at it, is bad; there’s no getting around it. Unlike mayonnaise’s low fat options, burger sauce doesn’t have this, and believe me I’ve been looking!
- Salad cream – a beautiful sharp and tangy sauce that’s great with salads and in sandwiches. This sauce isn’t too bag because there are plenty of low fat/low Cal variations.
Killing the cravings
As you can see it’s a tasty list of enemies to have, and believe me there a savage bunch to beat. I’ve got a few hints and tips that I’d like to share with you, tips that have (are) helped me to deal with my cravings, they can be applied to all foods, not just sauces.
Food Craving Tip #1 – If you don’t want to eat it don’t buy it! It may sound like a really simple one, but it really does work, I know from my own experience. My mum bought a bottle of burger sauce not long ago; I hadn’t thought about or craved before starting my diet. It was downhill as soon as it was in the cupboard; I just wanted to eat it with everything, just because it was there. Because I know it was there, my brain (me?) wanted it. The bottom line is I ate it when I shouldn’t have, I didn’t need it and done fine without it up to that point. Lack of willpower on my behalf. This tip has worked wonders for me, elevating temptation, staying on track and saves money!
Food Craving Tip #2 – Reduce don’t restrict; this is the key to making a life change in my honest opinion. I’m never going to give up sauces, that would be ridiculous haha; what I will do (doing) is reduce the amount I eat. It’s all about tasting and savouring what I’m eating, it not about the quantity. Everything in moderation.
Food Craving Tip #3 – Surround yourself with food you CAN eat; all dieting is, is will power, determination and frame of mind, that’s it. The way your brain thinks about things can be the difference between success and failure.
When I’m at work with a small amount of pre-prepared food for my mind is constantly thinking about food; when should I eat what I’ve got, will it fill me up, I still hungry what can I eat, the thoughts go on and on.
Nine times out of ten when this happens, I end up eating something (junk) I shouldn’t have, and the only reason I did that was because I didn’t have diet food on hand to eat instantly. Always keep foods that you can eat around if, when you can.
I take extra apples, bananas, oranges, muller light yoghurts, mugshots etc etc. I’ve found when I’m surrounded by food (that I can eat freely) I don’t think about it, at all hardly; It’s all about tricking your brain and eventually it’ll come naturally.
What are you waiting for? Destroy them!
Their simple, but very effective tips in my eyes, helping you to deal with your arch enemy cravings. It’s hard changing you’re eating habits, you’re vulnerable to so many temptations, surrounded by foods begging to be eaten, and you will indulge every now and then, that’s a given. As long as you shake it off and get back to eating healthy the next day, it really doesn’t matter in the grand scheme of things.
